Review of Hotel Samaya, Ubud/Bali

Staff that goes the extra mile, amazing food and lovely grounds

For our 3 days’ stay in Bali’s must-see town of Ubud my husband and I opted for the Hotel Samaya and enjoyed it there very much. Right after arrival, we marveled at the magnificient view of rice paddies, the luscious landscape and the warmth of the staff.

We had booked an Ajung Villa situated right by the Ajung River and close to the restaurant “Swept Away” and the spa. For this purpose we were brought to our villa down a steep hill by buggy. In the garden of the villa there are a generously sized pool, a daybed and a sitting area just on the river’s edge. The villa’s interior is nicely furnished, well equipped and in a good condition although there are some slight traces of use. The bathroom is very spacious; there are two sinks, a tub and a separate shower. All in all, we were satisfied with our accommodation.

There is afternoon tea included in the rate in the restaurant by the river, “Swept Away”, that we enjoyed very much. The baked goods are good and the atmosphere is splendid. Also the breakfast is a highlight. It is served in the restaurant “Scene” by the entrance uphill overlooking the rice paddies. There is a wide selection and the food is superb. What I felt is extraordinary is how we were treated by the staff. The manager usually took the opportunity to interact with us after breakfast. You got the impression that they really care for your wellbeing!

Once we also had dinner at the restaurant “Swept Away” offering Bali fare on the one hand and western food on the other hand. We opted for local food and found it delicious!
The hotel’s spa is marvelous. We had a massage included in our arrangement but we did not make an appointment until just before leaving. The staff at the spa asked us on our second last day when we wanted to have the treatment. So we arranged it for the morning of our departure and it was wonderful! We really enjoyed it although we usually do not use these services.

As already indicated above, the property is very hilly, but the staff will provide buggy transportation. There is also a transportation service to and from airport and into Ubud. The latter is very convenient as it takes about 15 minutes by car to get to the center of town.

In sum, it was a very pleasant stay at a wonderfully situated hotel with friendly and attentive staff.

Date of stay: April 2014
